The son of a Methodist minister, he spent his early years traveling with his family and developing a passion for electronics. After a brief career as an insurance clerk, he became a youth pastor, working with street kids. At the age of 20, despite a severe speech stutter, he excelled as a life insurance representative and obtained an amateur radio license.
